The Correct Formula
Many students make the mistake of simply adding their SGPAs and dividing by the number of semesters. This is incorrect because semesters have different "weights" (credits).
(Weighted Average Method)
Why Simple Average Fails
Imagine you have two semesters:
- Sem 1: 8.0 SGPA (20 Credits)
- Sem 2: 9.0 SGPA (24 Credits)
*The 9.0 semester had more credits, so it pulled the grade up higher than 8.5.
SGPA vs. CGPA
| Feature | SGPA | CGPA |
|---|---|---|
| Full Form | Semester Grade Point Average | Cumulative Grade Point Average |
| Scope | Single Semester (6 Months) | All Semesters to Date |
| Calculation Base | Course Grades × Course Credits | SGPA × Semester Credits |
| Usage | Tracking short-term progress | Job Placements & Degrees |
University Standards
This calculator complies with the regulations of major Indian universities.
VTU (Karnataka)
Follows absolute grading. Total credits usually range from 18 to 24 per semester. Backlogs result in 0 credits for the subject.
Anna University
Regulation 2017/2021. CGPA is calculated from the first semester. Credits vary by department (CSE, ECE, MECH).
KTU (Kerala)
Calculates SGPA/CGPA to two decimal places. Failed courses are not included in the credit sum until passed.
Why Accuracy Matters
Companies typically set cutoffs at 6.0, 6.5, or 7.0. A miscalculation of 0.02 could disqualify you from an interview.
Admission to MS/MBA programs (especially abroad) requires a precise CGPA for converting to the 4.0 scale correctly.
'First Class with Distinction' is often awarded at 7.75 (approx 70%). You need the exact decimal to know where you stand.
